Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How long is Canned or Pouched Salmon edible and how do I
determine the age of my Canned Salmon?
A. CANNED SALMON - Assuming the can is intact and has not been subjected to
temperature extremes, the shelf life for Canned Salmon is 5 to 6 years.
After that, some loss of flavor may be noticeable (Source: National Food
Processors Association). To determine the year our salmon was canned, locate
the embossed code on the lid of the can. The third digit of the top line of
this can code indicates the last number in the year the salmon was canned.
For example, if the third digit of the top line is "2", this salmon was
canned in the summer of 2002.
POUCHED SALMON - Pouched Salmon may be safely stored for several years as
long as the pouches are not bulged, leaking or otherwise damaged and the
seams are intact. It is recommended that pouches be stored at moderate or
cool temperatures.
